Glenmorangie Dr Bill Lumsden x Azuma Makoto 23 Years Old is inspired by the Japanese concept of âshinra banshoâ, which represents all of nature â âthe ground, the sky and everything in betweenâ.
To celebrate ânature in all its formsâ, Lumsden combined single malts aged in Bourbon and Chardonnay white wine casks. The latter are sourced from the Meursault appellation in Burgundy and mark the first time Glenmorangie have used such casks.
The expression is said to have ânotes of moss dampened by rainfall, burning oak and earthy scents of the forest floorâ.
The whisky itself is a limited edition release that was distilled in 1998, three years after Dr Lumsden joined The Glenmorangie Company. Originally filled in bourbon casks, the single malt was transferred to Chardonnay casks in 2006. The refilling was the first time the distillery had used that type of cask. The official press release explained the unique whisky was finally combined with bourbon casks to create a ârich, deep and elemental limited editionâ that celebrates the natural world.
